Israeli negotiators are set to arrive in Doha today as international mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and the United States work to revive stalled ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas. The renewed diplomatic effort comes amid a worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza and continued hostilities between the two sides.
### **Hamas Condemns Israel’s Actions in Gaza**
As the talks commence, tensions remain high, with Hamas strongly criticizing Israel’s decision to cut off electricity supplies to Gaza. The move threatens the functioning of the enclave’s only desalination plant, which provides clean drinking water to hundreds of thousands of people. Hamas denounced the decision as “cheap and unacceptable blackmail,” warning that it would further exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in the region.
### **U.S. Envoy Suggests Progress in Hostage Negotiations**
Meanwhile, the U.S. special envoy overseeing negotiations has signaled cautious optimism regarding ongoing efforts to secure the release of Israeli captives held by Hamas. The envoy stated that direct talks with the group have been “very helpful” and suggested that “something could come together on Gaza within weeks,” hinting at the possibility of a breakthrough.
### **Mounting Death Toll in Gaza and Israel**
The humanitarian cost of the conflict continues to rise. The Gaza Health Ministry has confirmed that at least 48,453 Palestinians have been killed and 111,860 wounded since the outbreak of hostilities. The Government Media Office has provided a higher casualty estimate, reporting at least 61,709 deaths, including thousands believed to be buried under rubble.
On the Israeli side, at least 1,139 people were killed during the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, with more than 200 individuals taken captive during the assault.
