WASHINGTON D.C. – A bombshell revelation from a top Democrat has ignited fresh controversy around the handling of Jeffrey Epstein’s files, with claims that the FBI undertook a “massive operation” to comb through documents and “flag” any mention of Donald Trump. This allegation, made by Senator Dick Durbin, the leading Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, throws a new spotlight on the Trump administration’s transparency regarding the sprawling sex trafficking investigation.
According to a letter sent by Senator Durbin to the heads of the Justice Department and the FBI on Friday, his office received alarming information suggesting that approximately 1,000 FBI personnel were placed on 24-hour shifts in March to review roughly 100,000 documents connected to the deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein. These agents, Durbin alleges, were given explicit instructions to identify and set aside any materials that referenced President Trump.
Durbin’s letter raises critical questions about whether political considerations influenced the ongoing review and potential suppression of Epstein-related evidence. He questioned the timeline of the review process, noting that despite tens of thousands of personnel hours, the Justice Department took “more than three additional months” to announce in a July 7 memo that there was “no incriminating client list” among the materials.
The revelation comes amidst renewed public and congressional pressure on the administration to release more of the Epstein documents. While Attorney General Pam Bondi recently stated she would ask a federal court to unseal additional grand jury transcripts, Durbin’s claims suggest a deeper, potentially politically motivated, layer to the handling of the sensitive files.
“The American people deserve to know whether political considerations played a role in the review and release—or suppression—of records related to one of the most disturbing sex trafficking investigations in our nation’s history,” Durbin wrote, demanding answers regarding who gave the “flagging” directive and what happened to the flagged materials.
This latest development promises to intensify scrutiny on the administration’s handling of the Epstein case, fueling existing skepticism among both Democrats and a segment of the Republican base who have long called for full transparency. The FBI has declined to comment on Durbin’s allegations.
